As stated above, a user is a unique visitor who visits your website. Usually, a user is identified by the distinct client ID which is identified in NotifyVisitors’ tracking cookie. In case the user revisits your website on the same browser and device while not clearing the cookies. NotifyVisitors will identify that person as the same user.
- Session :
NotifyVisitors' session is the browsing period of a specific user. A session usually begins when a user comes to your site and ends the session when any of these situations occur :
a. Inactivity: NotifyVisitors will end the session if the user has not been active on your site for more than 30 minutes.
b. Midnight: NotifyVisitors automatically ends all the sessions at midnight in order to get an aggregate of the metrics of the whole day. Therefore if a user is browsing at 11:59:59 pm and views another page at 12 am, NotifyVisitors will generate a new session.
c. User’s campaign source: NotifyVisitors automatically ends a session if a user has come to your site from a different campaign source. For example- If a user has arrived at your site from an Instagram ad and then clicks on the mail sent by you, NotifyVisitors will end the facebook session and begin a new session even if mere seconds have been passed between the Instagram ad and the click of the email.

Suppose Mark visits an e-commerce website at 11 am and searched for a product and found one but is hesitant to buy it as he is unaware of the pros and cons of it. Therefore, he looked for the reviews on the review page for 15 minutes and was not quite sure whether to buy it or not. He took a break and later after a few hours, he came back to the same page at 2 pm and started from the same review page where he had. All of his actions were on the same browser and device. Also, he did not clear out the cookies.
How will you define the user and session in this example :
User: Mark used the same browser and device to visit the website and did not clear out the cookies for both the times. NotifyVisitors will count him as the same user.
Session: The first session began and ended when he visited the site and searched for the product. As we said that if a user has not performed any action for more than 30 minutes, the session after the break will be tracked as another session.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTORS IN SESSION VS USERS:
- If a user is visiting your site multiple times from the same browser and device, NotifyVisitors will count it as one user. They will be called Returning users as well as they are repeatedly browsing your site. But if the same user revisits to your site after deleting the browser cookies, he will be counted as the new user. Similarly, if a user switches the browser or device, and revisits the site, he will be counted as new. That means, whenever your site will be loaded on a new device or browser, the user will be counted as new even if he has visited your site multiple times.
- Session on the other hand is the total number of visits to your site that is inclusive of the recent and the repetitive visits. If a person visits your site 15 times on the same device, he will be counted as one user and the sessions will be counted as 15.
Note: NotifyVisitors will begin a new session after 30 minutes of inactivity or at midnight. Therefore, if a user visits your website and takes a break of more than 30 minutes before he returns to the website, then it will be counted as 2 sessions.
HOW TO NAVIGATE TO USERS AND SESSIONS IN NOTIFYVISITORS :
You can view the total number of users, new users, and sessions by navigating to NotifyVisitors >SEGMENTATION> PEOPLE.
- The overview report will give you a wide clarity of the total numbers of users who are reachable by different platforms. Also, you can take a look at the new and active users who reached your site during a specific time period. At the same time, you can have a look at the other key metrics of the campaigns such as conversion rates and revenue in ANALYTICS SECTION.
- Analyze the sessions metric to know how your site is performing. If you see an increase in the sessions, it is a great sign and signal that many visitors are browsing to your site. Simultaneously, you can watch out whether those sessions are resulting in goal conversions or not.
